Wojtek Groborz

Jazz pianist, arranger, composer and educator Wojtek Groborz has been on the musical scene since 1975, when he opened Krakow's Jazz All-Saints' Day jazz festival leading his own big-band. He went on to gain further recognition playing in Jarosław Śmietana's Extra Ball, and subsequently has been travelling the globe with Jan Kudyk's Jazz Band Ball Orchestra for over 20 years now. However, he remains constantly active as a leader in his own right as well mainly of his Trio, whose concerts have been filling venues with listeners for over 8 years now.

He has performed and/or worked steadily with virtually the entire 'front line' of the Polish jazz scene, including the likes of Janusz Muniak, Jan 'Ptaszyn' Wróblewski, Henryk Majewski and ...

An alumnus of the Krakow Academy of Music, he has been present on the jazz scene for over 30 years now. Having studied under Barry Harris and Hal Galper, he is also a highly regarded teacher of jazz music, and is currently involved with the newly-established jazz studies department of his Alma Mater.

Groborz Trio

Wojtek Groborz pursues a wide range of paths in his musical work from the occasional solo gig, all the way to performances with his nonet; however, the Trio remains the primary format of his activity. The Groborz Trio presents an original BeBop style with elements of Afro-Cuban music in keeping with the late, great Jelly Roll Morton's statement that "... all good jazz had to have a Latin Tinge". Their carefully selected repertoire is comprised of more as well as lesser-known original jazz compositions (including many by Dizzy Gillespie), standards with new and fresh-sounding arrangements, and the leader's own compositions lyrical ballads and fiery, expressive Latin tunes.

Vitality, elegance, mastery, a rarely-encountered, uncompromising purity of style and swing-filled groove make each concert by the Trio an unforgettable musical experience.

The group has put out a CD titled Yet another BeBop Day (Not Two Records MW 713-2)

Among those who Wojtek Groborz invited to cooperate on the project with him are super time-keeper Wiesław Jamioł a drummer who also works with the JBBO and Tomasz Kupiec, who proved to be the first of a series of choice bassists to work with the Trio; his successors and alternates are Maciek Adamczak, Adam Kowalewski. and a representative of yet a younger generation Dominik Wywrocki. Outstanding drummer Łukasz Żyta can also be heard on the CD, as well as the occasional concert by the Trio.
